Apple announces an Intel-based iMac and the Mac Book Pro

Apple has annnounced its first Intel-based Macs today, during MacWorld SF 2006 opening Keynote. The two first Macs to go Intel are the iMac and the Mac Book Pro (former Powerbook).

iMac

The new iMac ships with the same features as the iMac G5 released just two months ago, including a built-in iSight, Front Row with Apple Remote, SuperDrive and 17″ and 20″ form factors. However the new iMac is now based on an Intel Duo (dual core) processor at clock speeds of 1.83Ghz and 2Ghz.

iMac 17″:
- 17″ display with 1440x900 resolution,
- 1.83Ghz Intel Core Duo processor with 2MB of shared L2 cache
- 160GB of SATA storage
- $1299

iMac 20″:
- 17″ display with 1440x900 resolution,
- 2Ghz Intel Core Duo processor with 2MB of shared L2 cache
- 250GB of SATA storage
- $1699

Both Macs ship with:
- 512MB of SO-DIMM DDR memory running at 667Mhz
- Slot-load 8x SuperDrive
- ATI Radeon X1600 fraphics with 128MB of GDDR3 memory
- Built-in Airport Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0

Apple claims that the Intel-based iMac is twice as fast as the one it replaces.

Mac Book Pro

Mac Book Pro is the new name of Apple’s high-end laptops, based on Intel Core Duo 1.67Ghz and 1.83Ghz processors. The Powerbooks remain on Apple’s stores with no feature changes.

The Mac Book Pro comes with a new 15.4″ inch form factor and adds a built-in iSight camera, Front Row with Apple Remote, improved graphics, and an improved power adapter. The form factor is a bit different as Apple has opted for a 15.4″ screen for its middle-end lap’top

The Mac Book Pro comes in two models:

15.4″ 1.67Ghz:
- 1.67Ghz Core Duo processor with 2MB of shared L2 Cache,
- 512MB of RAM running at 667Mhz,
- 80GB of SATA storage
- ATI Mobility Radeon x1600 with 128MB of GDDR3 memory
- $1999

15.4″ 1.83Ghz:
- 1.67Ghz Core Duo processor with 2MB of shared L2 Cache,
- 1GB of RAM running at 667Mhz,
- 100GB of SATA storage
- ATI Mobility Radeon x1600 with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
- $2499

Both Apple Book Pros come with:
- 15.4″ TFT display with 1440x900 resolution
- 667Mhz frontside bus
- a slot-load SuperDrive
