An AppleInsider forum member has discovered very interesting clues found on the latest iPod firmware update, hinting at an iPhone and an iPod Messenger feature.

Looking at the latest iPod firmware's code, the forum member has found references of the following applications and variables:
- t_feature_app_PHONE_APP (application)
- kPhoneSignalStrength,
- clPhoneCallHistoryModel,
- prPhoneSettingsMenu,
- prPhoneSettingsMenuView,
- prPhoneEnableSetting,
- prPhoneMenuItem,
- t_feature_app_MESSENGER_APP (application)
- clMessengerModel,
- clMessengerApplication."

While Apple never confirmed its plans to release an iPhone and analysts are rumouring that the firm has delayed the release of such a device to next year, these hints bring some hope that Apple might be paving the way for a release earlier than expected.
